Give and Take

Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires. – Psalm 37:4

I was reading the book Big God, by Britt Merrick, and came across this line: “God is a giver, not a taker. For everything that I surrendered to Him, He blessed me with far more than I could have ever imagined.”  If that’s how gracious and giving God is, shouldn’t I be following His example? I’m proud by nature. I take. I love to receive. God says He’ll give me the desires of my heart, but I’d like to follow my own direction, thank you very much.

A person who gives doesn’t act like other people. He or she is imitating God instead of the world. Just watch how they treat other people. Is she kind to her parents? Does he respect authority? Does she discriminate, or does she choose to serve? The giving personality understands that it’s more blessed to give than receive. They choose not to be served. What about you?

In my pride, I never thought in a million years that God could give me the desires of my heart. I didn’t believe that God would be able to get around my plans and defenses and surprise me with joy, but He has…and it’s the best feeling in the world. I am giving to others in ministry and being blessed in return. God knows the best way for me to bring glory to Him, and who am I to get upset at the Potter when I am the clay?

Prayer: You are the great Giver, lavishing every good thing upon me. Help me to be a generous and giving today as you are. Surprise me with your grace today, Lord.
