Fairy Tales

And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. – Philippians 1:6

Life is never easy for characters in fairy tales. The prince has to rescue a princess from a tower, or do battle with a fiery dragon. The princess has to outwit a wicked witch or find a way to break the enchantment. The maidservant has to find a way to get the prince to notice her, and the stable boy has to outwit the cruel stepmother. And there might be a few ogres along the way.

Walt Disney once said that Cinderella “believed in dreams, all right, but she also believed in doing something about them. When Prince Charming didn’t come along, she went over to the palace and got him.” Part of growing up is taking the first step on that epic journey, not knowing where it will take us. There’s more to the story than the kiss at the end, after all.

When we put as much effort into discovering the heart of God as we do to examining our love lives, we become the best version of ourselves. The more time I spend plotting how to attract the attention of the latest Prince Charming in my life, the more I miss out on the rich, powerful, unending love of God.

In Proverbs 4:25-27, Solomon tells us to “Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path. Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil.” Where is the journey leading you today? Ask God to take your hand and walk beside you, no matter how much fire the dragon breathes or how deep the enchantment may be.

Prayer: I crave an adventure with you. Help me stay on the narrow path. No matter how difficult it is, don’t let me stray to the left or to the right. Keep my feet from evil! Amen.
