Have you even written a letter to someone but then thrown it away or burned it? Maybe you’re like me, rehearsing your words to the other person in front of the mirror. Or maybe you were taken completely by surprise when the person who meant the most to you in the world said, “This just isn’t working for me.”
No matter how you go about it, breakups are tough. Some are unexpected, and others we see a long time coming. After a painful breakup we think it’s over. There won’t be any more chances at happiness. There will never be a new relationship – someone else to make our eyes shine. We wine. We cry. We go backwards. We want to be back with our ex, and in the next breath we hate our ex. We do anything but glorify God with our actions. It’s as if we’ve taken our grace, crumpled it up, and thrown it back in God’s face. We sever trust and choose to dwell in our misery.
The Bible says, “You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror” (James 2:19). Good job. You believe…and now the tough part remains. No matter how physically, verbally, or emotionally upsetting a breakup is, we must remain in God. Our words, our actions, and our every choice must be centered on God’s will, not our own pain. Trust in God’s ability to write a happy ending for your story, no matter how much trail you endure along the way. Remain. Remain. Remain.
Prayer: Relationships are sometimes too hot to handle, and my emotions can be all over the place. They drive me crazy and I can’t think straight. This is why I need you now, today, more than ever. Amen.
