The Lord’s light penetrates the human spirit, exposing every hidden motive. – Proverbs 20:27

We all have a past. Things we’ve said or done that could affect our new relationships. Maybe you’ve slept around or maybe you’ve never been kissed. Maybe you’re somewhere in the middle. But we all have doubts about ways our history could change our future.

Honesty is so crucial to a strong relationship. And not just honesty about the “big” stuff, like your past relationships. Be honest about your future. Be honest about your weaknesses. Be honest about your hopes, your regrets, and your fears. Honesty up front will prevent heartbreak later.

If you are hiding something, it will eventually be brought into the light. Maintain trust in your relationship by telling the truth and keep short accounts with each other. Don’t let fear rule your relationships –whether it’s fear of the past coming back to haunt you, a fear of the unknown, or a fear of exposing your true self.

There’s one Person who already knows the dark secrets of your past, of course. Someone who knows all your shame and has taken it onto Himself. Someone who knows the true self you keep hidden from the world, and who loves you anyway. “I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself” (Jeremiah 31:3). The life Christ offers you has no room for shame, fear, or dishonesty. No – in Christ you are totally, unashamedly free.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, please guard my life. Don’t let me follow the cravings of my sinful nature, but help me give myself to you, totally and unashamedly. Amen.
