Choosing Contentment

Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. – 1 Timothy 6:6

Each of you should continue to live in whatever situation the Lord has placed you, and remain as you were when God first called you” (1 Corinthians 7:17). Yikes. A rule? Maybe we should pay attention.

We’re always looking to change our situation. We continually search online for someone to make us feel loved. We seek that better job, a different career, a cuter apartment. But in all the choices we make, we should choose to know the Lord. That’s the wisest choice of all.

Elyse Fitzpatrick said, “The truth about the choices we make is plain. We don’t consistently choose the Lord because we don’t really desire him…and we don’t really desire him because we’re not convinced that choosing him will result in our happiness.” She echoes Paul’s words from Philippians 1:13: “For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.

Is your desire for a relationship? For a better job? For the latest gadget? Or is your desire to work for God’s kingdom? When our desires and our choices are in line with God’s plan, we get to serve our Heavenly Father – with joy! This joyful contentment starts with the choices we make. Daily. If you’re in a place in your life where you feel unsatisfied, use this time to store up treasures in heaven. Don’t think for a moment that contentment is your mother or grandmother’s word. Choosing contentment is tough work, but strive for it anyway. Trust that God can use you where you are.

Prayer: Don’t let me believe the lies of the enemy that contentment means giving up! Give me the peace to surrender my choices to you daily as I learn to serve you and love others. Amen.
