The Rent

Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you, I will never abandon you.” – Hebrews 13:5

You graduated from college with a degree you loved but wasn’t, as your parents warned you, all that much use in the real world. So you got that job that didn’t pay much – just a few hundred bucks a week, enough to afford a tiny apartment. Money’s tight, but at least you’re living on your own!

But along comes this guy. And you really, really want to impress him. So the day before the date, you buy a sexy new dress. You indulge in a mani and pedi. New perfume. New heels to match the new dress.

Or along comes this girl – a girl you really think could be The One. You suit up and take her out to the most expensive restaurant in town – the one where you can’t read the menu because it’s all in French and the waiter turns up his nose when you don’t know which wine to order.

And there goes the rent money!

Where do you spend your money when you’re trying to impress someone? God calls us to be responsible with our finances. “Give to everyone that you owe them,” says Paul in Romans 13:7. That includes the money for rent, school loans, groceries, and all the other bills that hit your mailbox. If it means you can’t afford that mani and pedi, or that you can’t cover the tip for the valet, choose a more affordable (and more relaxed) date! Show off your best self, without all the trimmings. If you’re responsible with your finances, offering all you can to God, the Lord promises to “pour out a blessing so great you won’t have room enough to take it in!” (Malachi 3:10).

Prayer: Open my eyes to the person I have become. Show me that in the midst of any type of crisis, you are my ultimate provider – not people. Thank you for showing me that you will never leave or abandon me. Amen.
