The Bible is full of complicated relationships. Check out the story of Lot and his daughters in Genesis 19, right after the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. The daughters were worried that they’d never be able to marry and have children, so they got their father drunk and slept with him. Talk about complicated!
Or take the story of David and Bathsheba in 2 Samuel 11. King David is wandering around his rooftop and sees “a woman of unusual beauty” – Bathsheba – bathing. The kind sends for her, sleeps with her, and gets her pregnant. And then, to cover up his sin, he arranges for her husband to be killed in battle. Talk about complicated!
But look what God does with that complicated relationship. Look how he transforms two broken people. David and Bathsheba had a son together – Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived. And that son was the ancestor of the Messiah (Matthew 1:6).
I’ve met a lot of wonderful couples who have strong marriages, and I’ve met single people who are perfectly content. But they didn’t always start out that way. There were a lot of complications along the way, and a lot of struggles with God’s will. Every healthy relationship has a strong foundation, and building that foundation takes a lot of time and a lot of work. But no matter how many bumps and obstacles and It’s complicateds you encounter along the way, the Creator of the universe will be able to incorporate your mistakes into His great plan.
Prayer: You stay the same, yesterday, today, and forever. That your love covers all mistakes, complications, and failed attempts. Redeem my past relationship. In your name I pray, Amen.
