The Broken Place

I live in the high and holy place with those whose spirits are contrite and humble. I restore the crushed spirit of the humble and revive the courage of those with repentant hearts. – Isaiah 57:15

When we repent and draw near to God, He restores us. We’re forgiven. Brand new. Though our sins were like scarlet, we have been made as clean as snow. Whiter than white.

We can get pretty broken before we’re willing to come to that place of repentance, though. I’ve talked to so many young adults who’ve begun relationships with the best of intentions. They’re going to put purity first. But somewhere along the line communication stops and the physical sparks fly. “I have needs” becomes their mantra.

I’ve seen the pain written all over their face as the relationships turns sour. I’ve seen the hurt as others – mainly those within the church – judge them. If you’ve dealt with that kind of brokenness, look to Christ. Jesus never treated someone in need with disgust or disdain. He welcomed beggars and prostitutes with open arms and told them to “go and sin no more” (John 8:11). He was not wishy-washy about the person’s sin or the state of their heart, but neither did He point the finger. No matter where you are, Jesus is waiting for you. The Bible says, “The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent” (2 Peter 3:9).

Next time you’re feeling the itch to pull your old life closer, remember Jesus’s example. Remember His forgiveness. Remember the fulfillment that only He can provide.

Prayer: Thank you for forgiving me and making all things new. I choose to follow you and your ways today. I want to find rest for my mind, body, and soul. Help me to be careful of how I treat others.
