What's In Your Heart?

The Lord looks at the heart. – 1 Samuel 16:7

How are you supposed to “just know” when you meet the person you’re going to spend your life with? Shouldn’t there be a lot more analyzing and scrutinizing that goes into it? First dates always make me nervous for that very reason. Everything means something, right? If I’m smiling a lot, does that mean he’s the one? Or does it mean I need to stop grinning like an idiot? Is there something in my teeth? And if I can’t even figure that out, how do I know if I want to go on a second date?
Ask yourself if you have chemistry. Do you have interests in common? Does he make you laugh? Do you enjoy being around her? Does he share your passion for God, family, friends, and helping others? Remember what God told Samuel when he was looking for a new king to anoint for Israel: “Don’t judge by his appearance or height…The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). Before you go and judge someone’s character or what’s in his or heart, spend some alone time with God ask Him what He see in your heart.

The dating process can be exhausting. It will try and test your patience. Don’t give up! Ask God to give you the gift of discernment as you seek the person who just might be “the one”. And maybe, when God brings that man or woman into your life, your heart will match God’s desire for you!
Prayer: Don’t let my own sense of urgency or impatience get in the way as I pursue a new relationship. Help me to keep my thoughts and actions pure today and every day. Don’t let me forget to guard my heart. Amen.
