Two thousand years ago Paul wrote to Timothy, a young man he called his “true son in the faith” (1 Timothy 1:2), and challenged him to “Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.” Who wouldn’t want to date someone like that?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that I’ll never find a relationship worth pursuing if I’m not already acting like a godly woman. If I’m hanging out in bars every weekend, I’ll only meet people whose idea of a good time is…hanging out in bars (and how can you really get to know someone in that kind of setting?) Are you acting like the kind of person you want to attract? Check out what the apostle John says: “Let’s not merely say that we love each other,” he warns us. “Let us show the truth by our actions” (1 John 3:18). Did you get that? It’s not just what we say, but what we do that maters to God. Are you looking for a responsible guy? Then start taking responsibility for your work today. Are you looking for a patient woman? Then start learning how to hold your tongue! Are you looking for someone who’s gentle, devoted, forgiving, and committed to God? You can become that person too. And in the process, you’ll be fulfilling Paul’s instructions to the church Ephesus. “Imitate God…in everything you do,” he told them (Ephesians 5:1). Be Christ-like in your behavior, and you’ll find yourself blessed beyond your wildest dreams
Prayer: Help me to imitate you in everything I do, and to keep you always at the center of my relationships. Give me your heart, Lord. Amen.
